Term Paper

“Core questions in philosophy” is a book that focuses on basic ideas and thoughts of philosophy. It defines philosophy as a discipline dedicated to constructing theories and evaluating arguments. The W principle introduced in this unit, advocates for giving questions considerate thoughts and response. The W principle instills autonomy and use of critical thinking, principles philosophy warmly embraces. This paper explains the relevance of the W principle and reason as a way of acquiring knowledge.

The W principle is true: Thoughts refer to applying needed consideration when answering a question. Consideration refers to kind awareness of others feelings, thoughts and circumstances. These two principles are important in the answering of questions in order to attain the right response, making the W principle true.

Importance of the W principle: Harmonious relationships exist when thoughtfulness and consideration is applied in the answering of questions, this is the main reason as to why the W principle should be applied. In support to this argument, teacher in many schools today are insisting on the introduction of philosophy, this is because students need to be taught on how to respond to questions. Careless answers from student, which often demonstrate lack of consideration are offensive to teachers and slowly destroys the teacher- student relationship. This is an example of the many relationships, lack of consideration and thoughtfulness in answering of questions can kill.

In objection to this view: a number of people believe in giving their honest opinions to question without considering the crowd around them, this they claim illustrates autonomy. In response to this, consideration and thoughtfulness in giving response to questions creates a better chance of people to see eye to eye hence strengthening social bonds, in as much as the truth should be said, the manner in which it should be said is extremely important.

Reason: This unit also teaches that it is entirely through reason that people are able to attain understanding and knowledge. This is with no doubt in support of justification as a means of acquiring knowledge. Knowledge is knowledge of the truth, hence merely believing in things without adequate reason contradicts existence of knowledge.

Existence of God, knowledge and rational belief: Personally, I might not be a Christian, but, I definitely believe in God. Existence of God can be considered as rational belief. Rational belief is considered true with sufficient account; it is more flexible as compared to knowledge. This is because knowledge does not support assumptions.

Mind/body problems: Knowledge can also be acquired through perception, by simply observing reality knowledge is gained. This is however, not extremely reliable as the mind at times can perceive wrong information when under the influence of drugs such as hallucinations. It is only through reason, that the sensory data collected via perception is converted into useful information, if this sensory data collected was manipulated by influence of drugs then information gathered is considered false, hence not knowledge.

It is completely absurd to speak of knowledge whose understanding and origin is not clear. Emotions, vague notions and perceptual memories are not knowledge; this is because knowledge is lucid and can only be acquired through reason. This is what has led to the confusion of the existence of God, majority of philosophers oppose the existence of God simply because of lack of enough scientific evidence to prove his existence. This shows that rational belief is at times disregarded as false. This paper has clearly explained the benefits of consideration and thoughtfulness in giving response, as this is important in the creating of harmonious relationships. It also explains that knowledge is attained through reason, relationship between rational belief and knowledge, and mind/ body problems that could alter knowledge.
