A good review must at a minimum be informative, but to be excellent it must also be entertaining. Review writing peculiarities

First of all, a review assignment ensures that students will do the assigned reading, or the movie. Something will be done to review the work, because it is impossible to write about something that you never saw or read. It is a lot harder to fake familiarity, than to actually read the book or watch the movie. Secondly, reviews are logistically easy. Students that are assigned to write research papers will necessarily spend time finding sources, hunting for a topic, and wandering down dead ends. In contrast, if an instructor assigns a review of required reading, the students already have a topic, and their source, so they are able to spend their time reading, thinking, and writing. In the end, review essays offer the opportunity to use your most valuable skills available within the liberal arts education: the skill of significant reading and critical thinking. When a review is assigned, it is those skills that instructors hope to see being displayed.

Review writing steps

The first step in writing a professional review is to describe the work and its major idea. For example, if you have to review a biography of a celebrity, it would be right to give your reader some idea of who this person was, and why they should read about him, prior to discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the book itself. The main thing is to supply the summary in the shortest possible space. At the end you will have to repeat the author's ideas, not your own, so this section should be only a small part of the whole review. The next step is to describe the work itself. After you determine the author's goals, you now can explain whether the author achieved those in his work. At the end of the review, it is crucial that you just be critical. Your audience is looking to you to give them some direction, so don't hold back. Just be fair, without being subjective, or biased. But be honest, and you will end up having a really good review.
